Cycling Federation of Belize

CFB 2016 Calendar Released

Earlier today, the Cycling Federation revealed its 2016 Calendar of events. The most outstanding feature in this year’s program is the return of the tour. Last year the federation experimented with a mini tour by changing the Valentine Race from a classic to a three part event. It featured a prologue, a criterium and a road race. Well this year they have listed a Tour of Belize for April 20 to 24 for the Senior Men and a Tour of Belize for Senior Women and Junior Men for May 13 to 15. The last Tour of Belize was held in 2008.

Holy Saturday falls in March this year so the Annual Cross Country Classic has moved back up to the last week of March giving hopefuls one less week to prepare. Additionally, both the Women Cross Country and Junior Cross Country are scheduled to be held in March before Holy Saturday.

Nationals are still in the second half of June but while the ITT route remains the same, the route for the road race just got more interesting. The Senior Men are slated to leave the southern village of Silk Grass on the Southern Highway and travel through the Hummingbird Highway which feature some of the most challenging elevations in Belize. The route continues through Belmopan City onto the Western Highway then cutting across to the Northern Highway to finish in Belize City some 117 miles later. The senior women and junior men will leave from the Hummingbird Highway at St. Margaret’s and The Blue Hole, respectively, and follow the remaining route previously mentioned. If there was any route subject to change, this would be it. Not for lack of enthusiasm by the cycling community, but for scheduled road works on the Hummingbird Highway that may not be completed by that time. It is worth noting though, that incomplete road works did not stop the 2015 course from proceeding as planned. Cycling fans of the south will be further treated by the return of the Sagitun Banana Classic scheduled later in the year in October. This is scheduled to take place in the area of Independence Village, home of outstanding female cyclist, Shalini Zabaneh.

With the inclusion of some Saturday races, the 2016 calendar, seemingly attempts to provide what has been lacking in recent years, more races.
