BNE Rides for Cancer

on

Belmopan City, BELIZE

Belize Natural Energy Ltd (BNE) hosted the first charity ride of the 2015 calendar year. At 6:00am yesterday morning, some 50 cyclists and casual riders pedaled off from BNE’s Belmopan City office en route to Dangriga by way of the Hummingbird Highway. They rode in honor of family and friends affected by cancer. BNE’s Energy for Life Program, a staff initiative, organized the ride to raise funds for the Dangriga Cancer Center in Dangriga Town.

The idea was born after a BNE staff encounter with members of the San Ignacio Cancer Society in the second half of 2014 at their headquarters at Spanish Lookout in the Cayo District. “The staff at BNE always tries to promote healthy living and we started a riding club where a number of us try to add a fun way to exercise and stay healthy”, said Anigi Ramirez, BNE lead organizer of the event. She continued, “A bike ride seemed like a good way to encourage a healthy lifestyle while raising awareness for a worthy cause”. Though this is their first ride, BNE’s Energy for Life Program has aided other charitable causes before and has now set a target of Bz$20,000, which they are confident they can meet. The main source of funds will be from pledges by industry business partners.

The Dangriga Cancer Center is a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Elsworth Grant and Mrs. Delone Pascasio in October of 2008. They provide services and treatment for cancer patients and patients with hematological disorders across Belize. A Representative from the Center said, “We are very appreciative of the support of BNE through this initiative because any support is welcome and funds raise go directly to patient care.” A brief ceremony to close out the ride was held at the Princess Royal Park in Dangriga where Mrs. Pascasio graciously thanked BNE and its organizing members as well as the riders for showing their support for a worthy cause; a cause many families in Belize and worldwide are all too familiar with.

Partaking in the event were riders from various organizations and clubs including; Belize Natural Energy, Belize Electricity Ltd, Big Blade Cycling Club, Digicell 4G Cycling Team, Team Police, BECOL/Chavarria, Team SMART, Western Spirit Cycling Team, Shake ‘n Bake Cycling Team, Benny’s Megabytes Cycling Team, Santino’s, and host of cycling enthusiasts.

Ramirez closed by saying that they are working towards making this an annual event.
